Dupin had barely tolerated Sophie while her son was alive, and after he died she made it clear that her low-born daughter-in-law was not welcome under the same roof at the Nohant house. She was also devoted to Aurore and did not take kindly to the idea of losing custody and supervision of her to Sophie. Despite her travail during the uprising, she supported the revolution.

As a member of the pre-revolutionary aristocratic order, she had narrowly escaped the guillotine after imprisonment during the Reign of Terror, even though her husband was a disciple of political philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, father of the French revolution. At the age of three she traveled across the Pyrenees with her mother to join her father, who was on the staff of the Marshal of France, Prince Murat - subsequently to become King of Naples. It was a wondrous time for her, with remembrances of sharing a suite in the royal palace with her parents, serving as an informal adoptee of a military regiment, wearing a full green hussar uniform for the prince and being affectionately indulged by the regiment’s gruff military men. All this abruptly came to an end when her father, an expert horseman, was killed in a bizarre horse-riding accident. She was controversial in the dress she affected, often wearing men’s garb and hats, and she smoked cigars and cigarettes in public at a time when such practice was unthinkable for women. Sand was also a protofeminist more than a century before the feminist movement took hold in Europe and America. She wrote more than seventy novels, twenty-four plays, ten autobiographical volumes and 40,000 letters - half of them published - as well as numerous book reviews, political pamphlets and essays.
